Calendar of Olfactory Events and Workshops at Ayala Moriel Parfums Studio

Ayala Moriel offers private workshops and events integrating the pleasures of fragrance and flavour. Get creative and learn how to make your own natural perfume, scented chocolate truffles and other fragrantly creative ideas for aromatic cooking, body care and home fragrance - all naturally, of course.

The workshops take place in an intimate, informal setting at Ayala Moriel Parfums' studio. For your convenience, we are also happy to offer these workshops at your preferred venue. We can also accomodate your interest and age groups - Ayala has years of experience instructing all ages - inlcuding children, teenagers and adults!

Spring 2015:

Citrus & Cologne Week + Lab 101: Foundation of Natural Perfumery Course Week 1/8

May 11-15, 2015

Designed for students who live too far to attend the monthly sessions at the studio and want to excel in their studies of natural perfumery. This week-long intensive course runs Mon-Thur from 9:30am-3:30pm, Fri 9:00am-1:00pm, and offers theoretical and practical guidance alongside hands-on lab exercises and experiments. Friday is dedicated for summary and one-on-one sessions with each participant. The summer session covers studying the raw materials, perfume structure, how to blend a formula, how to write a formula, building accords and creating simple solid perfumes, as well as cologne and citrus formulation in an alcohol base. Feature workshop: Scented Body Products - how to create your own simple bath and body products such as bath salts, sugar scrubs and massage oils. The fee includes book, materials and supplies. 

Leather/Tobacco - Foundation of Natrual Perfumery Course Week 7/8 

May 19-23, 2015

This course covers studying the history of Leather and Tobacco perfumes, the quirky raw materials essential to this genre, and advanced lab sessions and lectures covering concepts such as perfume structure, composition, building leathery and tobacco accords, and mastering composition of both Leathery and Tobacco perfumes in an alcohol base.
Featured Lecture: Flavouring Tobacco.

Please note: This course is suitable only for advanced students who have completed at least 3 courses or more with Ayala Moriel Parfums. Prerequisites: must have completed successfully at least the following courses: Chypre, Fougere and Oriental weeks. 

Autumn 2015:

FOUGÈRE week - Foundation of Natural Perfumery, Week 2/8 

September 21-26, 2015

Designed for students who want to excel in their studies of natural perfumery. This week-long intensive course runs Mon-Thu from 9:30am-4pm, and Friday from 9:00am-1:30pm and offers theoretical and practical guidance alongside hands-on lab exercises and experiments. Friday is dedicated for feedback, summary and one-on-one sessions with Ayala for each participant. This course is dedicated to the Fougère fragrance family, covering the raw materials the characterize this genre, learning about the history of the Fougère fragrance family and the sub-categories in this family. Students will be introduced to composition concepts such as perfume structure, and equipped with basic technical skills such as how to blend an alcohol based perfume, how to write a formula, and acquire good working habits. In the practical workshops that take place each afternoon, students will be building vertical and horizontal accords, as well as two representative fragrances from the Fougère family.

Feature workshop: Tincturing Deer's Tongue, Créme (Solid) Parfum

The fee is $1,800, and includes all materials and supplies used during the week.
Please note: Students are required to purchase a course textbook (one-time only) and their own Basic Essences Kit prior to their first course start date. The same book is used throughout the entire program.


ISOLATES - Foundation of Natural Perfumery (ADVANCED/Elective)

October 5-9, 2015

The palette of natural perfumers is expanding, and natural isolates are one way to add new notes, nuances and special effects to your perfumes as well as challenge your composition skills.This course will cover 25 key raw materials from both ther

In the theoretical part of this course you will learn about the different types of isolates, how they are manufactured, a little bit about their chemistry, and how to know if your raw material is truly natural or not, learn to identify isolates by blind-testing, find out where they are naturally occurring and be able to pick them out in a composition or a naturally-occurring olfactory scenario. And last but not least: learn about the qualities that make isolates useful and valuable when composing fragrances.

In the practical lab sessions, you will incorporate these exciting raw materials into compositions of your own, and receive hands-on guidance from master perfumer Ayala Moriel addressing issues unique to your style, blending and process, and problem-solving along the way.

Designed for the most advanced students of perfumery, and for working perfumers who wish to polish their skills at manipulating the composition with much finesse and refinement, and master the use of unique, rare and unusual accessory notes.

This week-long intensive course runs Mon-Thu from 9:30am-4:30pm, and 9:00am-1:30pm on Friday, and offers theoretical and practical guidance alongside hands-on lab exercises and experiments. Friday is dedicated for feedback, summary and one-on-one sessions with Ayala for each participant.

Fee: $1,800, and includes all materials and supplies used during the course. Students are required to purchase a course textbook prior to their first course start date.

Prerequisites: This course is suitable only for working perfumers, and for advanced students who have completed at least 5 courses with Ayala Moriel Parfums. Please note that this is an elective course, complementary to the program, but not essential for completion of it. Students are only required to complete parts (or weeks) 1-8. 

Winter 2015:

Orientals - FOUNDATION OF NATURAL PERFUMERY COURSE Week 4/8

November 16-20, 2015 

Designed for students far and near Vancouver, and want to excel in their studies of natural perfumery. This week-long intensive course runs Mon-Thu from 9:30am-4:00pm, Fri 9:00am-1:00pm, and offers theoretical and practical guidance alongside hands-on lab exercises and experiments. Friday is dedicated for summary and one-on-one sessions with each participant. The Autumn session covers studying the raw materials, perfume structure, how to blend a formula, how to write a formula, building accords and creating simple solid perfumes, and basic Oriental formulation in an alcohol base. Featured workshops: Incense Making Workshop (Indian-style incense cones or Ancient Egyptian Kyphi) The fee includes all materials and supplies used during the course.

The fee is $1,800, and includes all materials and supplies used during the week.
Please note: Students are required to purchase a course textbook (one-time only) and their own Basic Essences Kit prior to their first course start date. The same book is used throughout the entire program.

Chypre week - Foundation of Natural Perfumery, Week 3/8 

February 22-26, 2016

This course format was especially designed for students who live too far to attend the monthly sessions at the studio and want to excel in their studies of natural perfumery. This week-long intensive course runs Mon-Thu from 9:30am-3:30pm, and Friday from 9:00am-1:00pm, and offers theoretical and practical guidance alongside hands-on lab exercises and experiments. Friday is dedicated for summary and one-on-one sessions with each participant. The Autumn session covers studying the raw materials, learning about the history of the Chypre fragrance family and the sub-categories in this family. Students will be introduced to composition concepts such as perfume structure, and with basic technical skills such as how to blend an alcohol based perfume, how to write a formula. IN the practical workshops that take place each afternoon, students will be building accords and creating simple solid perfumes, as well one representative perfume from the Chypre family.

Feature workshop: Solid Perfume Making and/or Chypre Birds

The fee includes all materials and supplies used during the course. Students are required to purchase a course textbook prior to their first course start date. The same book is used throughout the entire program.

Prerequisites: Must have completed the Citrus & Colognes Week and/or Lab 101, and the Fougère course.

Floral Bouquets - Foundation of Natural Perfumery, Week 6/8

February 29 - March 4, 2016

Designed for students who live too far to attend the monthly sessions at the studio and want to excel in their studies of natural perfumery. This week-long intensive course runs Mon-Thur from 9:030am-3:30pm, and Friday from 9:00am-1:00pm. and offers theoretical and practical guidance alongside hands-on lab exercises and experiments. The Spring session covers studying the raw materials, perfume structure, how to blend a formula, how to write a formula, building accords and creating  floral bouquet perfumes in an alcohol base.

The fee includes materials and supplies.

Introduction to Natural Perfumery

This class is an interactive introduction to the art of natural perfumery. You will learn about how perfume is constructed, and will get exposed to the thinking process of a perfumer. You will learn how to sniff like a “Nose” and evaluate beautiful and strange essences from around the world, and smell how they were incorporated in some of Ayala Moriel’s perfume creations. This is part of a series of workshops to cultivate fragrance appreciation and expand your sensory world. Check our events calendar for a full list of interactive lectures throughout the year.

Personalized Perfume Making workshop

Learn how to make your own natural perfume! In this workshop, you will design and create your own personal perfume from precious botanical essences in a base of undenatured alcohol. By the end of the workshop, you will have made a perfume to take home with you, beautifully packaged in a spray bottle. We will keep the formulas on file so when you run out we can make it again for you!

Crème Parfum workshop

Learn how to make your own perfume! In this workshop, you will design and create your own personal perfume from precious botanical essences. By the end of the workshop, you will have made a perfume to take home with you. We will provide simple jars as basic packaging, but fancy silver compacts or porcelain pillboxes from the perfumer’s collection will be available for purchasing, for those who wish to add an extra visual and tactile touch to their first olfactory creation!

THE ART OF PERFUMED CANDLEMAKING

Join our guest instructor Nikki Sheritt, an artisan candle maker of Seattle-based Gabriel's Aunt,for an afternoon of candle-making. You will learn how to make beautifully fragrant soy candles using essential oils and natural vegetable waxes. You'll be guided step-by-step in the process of blending the essences, moulding and crafting a high-quality, clean-burning candle. By the end of the class, you will take with you aspecially scented candle, beautifully packaged and gift wrapped - ready to go under the tree!

THE ART OF INCENSE

Learn about the origins of incense and create your own incense blend using precious resins, gums, woods, spices and herbs. We will pulverize, grind and mix together raw materials that were used in incense makig since antiquity. Workshop will be dedicated to either incense cones or loose incense. Learn how to make scented chocolate truffles with fine chocolate base and delicious botanical essences. We will be making one type of children's favourite truffles (either white chocolate or milk chocolate), and you will be taking them home with you to share with siblings and friends (or not…).

Aromatic Cooking with Fresh Herbs, Spices & Floral Essences

Join Ayala for a fabulous evening of aromatic cooking- using fresh herbs,freshly ground spices, floral waters and essential oils - in both savory dishes and luxurious desserts. Your will be given a collection of recipes to try at home, and receive guidelines for aromatic cooking. In each class, we will prepare an inspiring dish together using seasonal vegetables and fruit. I hope that by the end of the class you will feel inspired to use your own ideas for aromatic culinary creations at home and feel encouraged to express your creativity in the kitchen, using the best quality aromatics you can source.

This series of interactive, sensory and multi-disciplinary presentations cultivate fragrance appreciation and expand your sensory world. Stop and smell the roses! Topics include: History of Perfume; Aphrodisiacs 101; Intro to Natural Perfumery; Selling Dreams – Marketing of Perfume. No class on Oct 29, 2014.


Real Clean Home

Learn how to use essential oils and sustainable, eco-friendly materials for keeping your home clean and smelling great. You’ll also be given simple recipes for home-care and cleaning, using a selection of easy-to-source essential oils combined with other natural ingredients such as vegetable oils, vinegar, botanical butters, sea salt, soap nuts and baking soda - and of course, beneficial essential oil that help to disinfect, dissolve grease and ward off bacteria, virus and fungus. You’ll leave with lots more information and lots of samples including counter-top spray, window cleaner, room spray, and more.



Art of Incense Series

Learn about the origins of incense, incense rituals and cultures. Create your own incense blends using precious resins, gums, woods, spices and herbs. This series will be divided into 4 parts – 2 theoretical and 2 hands-on incense making workshops in which we will make incense cones and Egyptian Kyphi – which is considered to be the most ancient perfume in the world! Evening’s topics: Through Smoke – The Shaman’s Fire; Egyptian Kyphi – The First Perfume in History; Oud Obsession – Japanese and Arabian Incense Culture; The Art of Incense Making.
