Calendar of Olfactory Events and Workshops at Ayala Moriel Parfums Studio

Ayala Moriel offers private workshops and events integrating the pleasures of fragrance and flavour. Get creative and learn how to make your own natural perfume, scented chocolate truffles and other fragrantly creative ideas for aromatic cooking, body care and home fragrance - all naturally, of course.

The workshops take place in an intimate, informal setting at Ayala Moriel Parfums' studio. For your convenience, we are also happy to offer these workshops at your preferred venue. We can also accomodate your interest and age groups - Ayala has years of experience instructing all ages - inlcuding children, teenagers and adults!

Fall 201:

October 20-24

Chypres week - Foundation of Natural Perfumery, Week 2/8 

his course format was especially designed for students who live too far to attend the monthly sessions at the studio and want to excel in their studies of natural perfumery. This week-long intensive course runs Mon-Fri from 9:00am-3:00pm, and offers theoretical and practical guidance alongside hands-on lab exercises and experiments. Friday is dedicated for summary and one-on-one sessions with each participant. The Autumn session covers studying the raw materials, learning about the history of the Chypre fragrance family and the sub-categories in this family. Students will be introduced to composition concepts such as perfume structure, and with basic technical skills such as how to blend an alcohol based perfume, how to write a formula. In the practical workshops that take place each afternoon, students will be building accords and creating simple solid perfumes, as well one representative perfume from the Chypre family.
Feature workshop: Solid Perfume Making
The fee includes book, materials and supplies as well as tea and refreshments.
Dates: Oct 20-24, 2014
Sessions take place from 9am to 4pm, with a lunch break from noon to 1pm.
The morning session (9am-12pm) is theory; and the afternoon (1pm-4pm) is dedicated to hands-on and practical exercises such as field trips, analytical study of colognes and citrus fragrances and body products, exploring raw natural plant matter, and hands-on composition and technical exercises in the lab.
Course is $1,800 including materials, supplies and book.

Fragrance Appreciation Series

This series of interactive, sensory and multi-disciplinary presentations cultivate fragrance appreciation and expand your sensory world. Stop and smell the roses! Topics include: History of Perfume; Aphrodisiacs 101; Intro to Natural Perfumery; Selling Dreams – Marketing of Perfume. No class on Oct 29, 2014.

October 21

Real Clean Home @ West End Community Centre

Learn how to use essential oils and sustainable, eco-friendly materials for keeping your home clean and smelling great. You’ll also be given simple recipes for home-care and cleaning, using a selection of easy-to-source essential oils combined with other natural ingredients such as vegetable oils, vinegar, botanical butters, sea salt, soap nuts and baking soda - and of course, beneficial essential oil that help to disinfect, dissolve grease and ward off bacteria, virus and fungus. You’ll leave with lots more information and lots of samples including counter-top spray, window cleaner, room spray, and more.

History of Perfume @ VanDusen Botanical Gardens

Perfumes begin with plants, and the earliest of perfumes were incense –
burnt resins and fragrant woods and gums whose smoke was believed to carry one’s prayers
to the gods. Take a journey beginning with the incense and perfumes created
in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, India and Arabia, then over to Europe to the
alcohol-based eau de colognes concocted by European monks and nuns that
doubled as liqueurs, medicine and bathing liquid. This discussion will be enhanced
with authentic historical incense and perfumes and will include plants growing at VanDusen
Botanical Garden.

Art of Incense Series @ West End COmmunity Centre

Learn about the origins of incense, incense rituals and cultures. Create your own incense blends using precious resins, gums, woods, spices and herbs. This series will be divided into 4 parts – 2 theoretical and 2 hands-on incense making workshops in which we will make incense cones and Egyptian Kyphi – which is considered to be the most ancient perfume in the world! Evening’s topics: Through Smoke – The Shaman’s Fire; Egyptian Kyphi – The First Perfume in History; Oud Obsession – Japanese and Arabian Incense Culture; The Art of Incense Making.

Learn how to make delicious truffles in this hands-on workshop and leave
with two types of truffles as well as recipes that you can easily prepare at home for gift-giving purposes and festive entertainment during the holiday season.
Following a short discussion on the process and a group decision on the
exploring the heartwarming holiday flavours and essences to add to the chocolate, students will prepare a

Botanical Aphrodisiacs @ VanDusen Botanical Gardens

Throughout time and cultures, humans have long been obsessed with herbs,
spices and fruit that were believed to awaken passion and bring forth love.
Some plants stimulate and increase in blood flow, while others help to relax
and put you in the mood. This discussion of the science, myth and folklore
of botanical aphrodisiacs will be enhanced with perfumes and essential oils, as well as VanDusen Botanical Garden examples.

We will welcome spring with elements that will engage all your senses and delight your soul: 4 hand-blended teas incorporating seasonal local plants, visually inspiring flower arrangements, soothing music, stunning jewellery by Japanese-Canadian designer Noriko Mahoney of The Dancing Leaf Design, and of course - our most delightful spring perfumes by Ayala Moriel Parfums.

This class is an interactive introduction to the art of natural perfumery. You will learn about how perfume is constructed, and will get exposed to the thinking process of a perfumer. You will learn how to sniff like a “Nose” and evaluate beautiful and strange essences from around the world, and smell how they were incorporated in some of Ayala Moriel’s perfume creations. Crème Parfum workshop

Learn how to make your own perfume! In this workshop, you will design and create your own personal perfume from precious botanical essences. THE ART OF PERFUMED CANDLEMAKING

Join our guest instructor Nikki Sheritt, an artisan candle maker of Seattle-based Gabriel's Aunt,for an afternoon of candle-making. You will learn how to make beautifully fragrant soy candles using essential oils and natural vegetable waxes. You'll be guided step-by-step in the process of blending the essences, moulding and crafting a high-quality, clean-burning candle. Aromatic Cooking with Fresh Herbs, Spices & Floral Essences

Join Ayala for a fabulous evening of aromatic cooking- using fresh herbs,freshly ground spices, floral waters and essential oils - in both savory dishes and luxurious desserts. Your will be given a collection of recipes to try at home, and receive guidelines for aromatic cooking. In each class, we will prepare an inspiring dish together using seasonal vegetables and fruit. I hope that by the end of the class you will feel inspired to use your own ideas for aromatic culinary creations at home and feel encouraged to express your creativity in the kitchen, using the best quality aromatics you can source.
