Foundation to Natural Perfumery Course


AyalaMoriel currently offers a Foundation of Natural Perfumery Course.Thisis a 2-year program, broken down into 4 terms of 5 sessions each.Theprogram is followed by a 1 year internship program at Ayala MorielParfums Studio, offered to qualified students only, who completed theprogram's requirements and were found suitable for the internshipprogram.


In this program, you will learn the fundamentals ofnaturalperfumery, and will lay the foundation to develop your own styleas anatural perfumer later on. We recommend the course for thoseinterested in pursuing a career in natural perfumery, although studentswith personal interest and no professional aspirations in the field arealso welcome.


The sessions take place on Wednesdays, once amonth, on site atAyala Moriel Parfums studio, where you will get tointeract with rare essences and learn from Ayala’s first handexperience in the industry. Each student also receives one-on-onepersonal sessions in the lab that will focus on each student’sindividual needs and development as natural perfumer, to prepare youfor working in the field. **As requested by several out-of-town student, that weekend,SundaySeptember 27th is Portobello West so you can stay for the weekendandgo and check it out.

Course fees per term (each term consists of 5 sessions):


$950 for all students (both for correspondence and for those attending the studio sessions)


Additional $500 for the intensive week (it is mandatory for correspondence students to attend at least one intensive week each year).


The course fees includes:


- Course handbook


- 5 Monthly sessions for each term, which will take place on the second Wednesday of each month between 9am-4pm


- 1 one-on-one personal session (2hr) with each student


- Evaluation and feedback of assignments and exercises


The course is also offered in a modified version as a correspondence course, including:


Depending on demand, a Natural Essences Kit of 25 different notes will be offered at an additional cost of $150


Purchasingthe kit is not mandatory, but these will be the oilsthat we will bestudying and use for our exercises and assignments.Students who wish toput together their own kit must do so by orderingfrom reputablesuppliers that guarantee the authenticity, naturalnessand quality oftheir essential oils. A list of some of these suppliersis provided inthe course handbook.


The following is a summary of the curriculum for this course.

Part 1: PREPARATION

- including how to prepare your workspace, tools, equipment and materials

Part 2: METHODOLOGY & RECORDING

-this section will cover topics such as: importance of recording,howtorecord a formula throughout its development (includingkeepingtracks ofmodification in the process); maintaining aperfumer’sjournal, and howto observe materials and perfumes throughtheirevolution

Part 3: AN OLFACTORY JOURNEY: EXPLORING THE BUILDING BLOCKS

-Sniffing techniques, developing an olfactory vocabulary,expandingyourolfactory repertoire, and systematically observing thevariousbuildingblocks we’ll be using.

Part 4: ODOUR CLASSIFICATION AND CATEGORIZATION

- categorization of building blocks, understanding the different roles of notes, and fragrance families

Part 5: APPROACHES TO BLENDING

-In this part you will learn about the different approachesthatcanassist you when creating a perfume. We’ll discuss approachessuchasthe architectural approach (using horizontal andverticalblending),exploratory blending, working from a brief, andotherapproaches toperfume design.

Part 6: FORMULATION

- This section will explain in much detail thetechnicalitiesofdeveloping a perfume formula, and the differencesbetweenformulatingalcohol based, oil based and solid perfumes. You willlearnhow tocreate a standardized formula (which is the industrystandard),andalso learn about the concentration required foraneffectiveperformance of natural perfumes (i.e.: sillage andlongevity).

As class size is extremely limited (only 6 students per course), we have a screening process in place. Please contact uswith your CV and a cover letter explaining why you want to studynatural perfumery at Ayala Moriel's studio. You may also send sample ofyour work if you have created any perfume, blend, aromatherapy synergy,soap, scented potpourri etc. (only ONE sample please).

Yourapplication will be followed by a phone interview and if you areaccepted into the program, a $190 non-refundable deposit is required toreserve your spot for the next program (starting September 2010).
